Q: What technical certifications do you have?

A: I’m both a GIAC Certified Forensics Analyst and a GIAC Certified Penetration Tester.

The interviewer needs to know what concrete skills you’ve been tested for.

Q: What programming languages are you comfortable with?

A: C, C++, C#, Java, and PHP.

The interviewer is making sure you’re familiar with the computing languages you’ll need for the job.

Q: Would you say that your college experience helped prepare you for this career?

A: Getting my IT degree taught me a lot, so yes.

The interviewer wants to make sure you value educational experiences.

Q: Describe for me your biggest strength.

A: I’ve written a technical manual on C++, which makes me highly familiar with the language.

The interviewer wants to make sure that you can be honest about your strengths without being too cocky.

Q: Describe for me your biggest weakness.

A: I sometimes get frustrated when things aren’t perfect. Recently I’ve been working on this, reminding myself that I can’t expect perfection and that I need to change my attitude.

Your interviewer wants you to be honest about your weaknesses, while doing your best to fix them.

Q: What is your favorite programming language? Why is it your favorite?

A: C#, because it doesn’t have too many problems when it comes to memory leak.

The interviewer wants to know which language you’re most comfortable in, and why. This shows where your values as a programmer lie.

Q: Do you have experience with Visual Studio?

A: Yes, I’ve had to use Visual Studio quite a lot, over the years.

Once again, the interviewer just wants to make sure you have the experience necessary to do the job.

Q: What’s a transaction log?

A: The transaction log is the record for all the edits made to a database. It’s important to look at the log to see if any edits were incorrectly made.

The interviewer has to make sure that you know your stuff. If you didn’t know what a transaction log was, you wouldn’t have the knowledge and skills needed to properly do the job. As well, you wouldn’t have been diligent in tracking and correcting your mistakes.

Q: Define SNMP.

A: SNMP stands for Simple Network Management Protocol. Essentially, it configures network devices.

Once again, the interviewer is making sure you understand the language of the industry. You can’t get thrown off by acronyms.

Q: Tell me which the technical websites you read.

A: I’m a big fan of Wired, PC World, and Gizmodo.

The interviewer is making sure that you keep up with the field.
